Located right next to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, has also seen a surge in visitors since it became free. It is an absolutely fascinating museum and one of our favourite museums anywhere in the world.

Inside you can learn all about outer space and the moon landings, take part in interactive exhibitions, see how steam trains and airplanes have revolutionised transport and much more. A paid admission area dedicated to young children with shows and interactive exhibitions makes learning fun too.

Also inside the museum is an IMAX screen showing scientific movies, as well as a simulator attraction and numerous kids play areas. There are also many places to shop and eat. Temporary exhibitions and special events mean there are always a multitude of reasons to keep coming back.

On the last Wednesday of each month from 18:45 to 22:00 the museum hosts ‘Lates’, a free adult-only night.

The “free” aspect of this museum is different to most others. They require you to go past a ticket desk where staff will ask you to donate to enter. It is not compulsory, but it can be awkward if you were expecting open entry like other museums. The suggested £5 donation is exceptional value but we’d rather they charge properly or just make it open access with donation points on the way out like other museums. You can, however, choose not to donate and enter for free.
